Once upon a time...

1927

In 1927, a young dreamer named Luigi D’Orsogna arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia, from Italy. He came seeking opportunity during the gold rush era, unaware that his journey would one day spark a 70-year family legacy of flavour, passion, and craftsmanship.

Luigi D’Orsogna’s sons, Cesare and Tommaso (Tom), left their hometown in Italy to join their father in Western Australia.

At 15 years of age, Tom started in the smallgoods manufacturing factory adjacent to the Wiluna Meat Supply’s Butcher Shop, where he spent four years making Australian style sausages, frankfurts, polony, corned beef, pickled pork and dripping.

A few years later, the third brother, Giovanni (John) D’Orsogna, joined his brothers in Fremantle to reunite with their father. By 1944, each brother had taken a different career path, yet their shared passion for quality smallgoods kept them connected.

In 1947, Tom moved to North Melbourne to work at a continental smallgoods manufacturer. After two years of mastering Italian-style and continental smallgoods, he returned to Perth and opened his own business called D’Orsogna Family Butcher in Stone Street, West Perth, in March 1949.

That same year, John joined the business, followed by Cesare in 1951. Together, they renamed it D’Orsogna Brothers Pty Ltd.

As word spread, D’Orsogna grew rapidly. Sales expanded across Perth’s metropolitan area and regional Western Australia, with the brothers introducing pre-packed products to meet growing consumer demand.

In 1973, D’Orsogna moved from West Perth to a new state-of-the-art facility on the corner of Leach Highway and Stock Road in Palmyra.

This modern site marked a new era for the brand, with D’Orsogna products soon appearing on Woolworths shelves across Australia.

With growing national demand, the Palmyra factory eventually reached capacity. To continue its legacy, D’Orsogna opened a new production facility at the Merrifield Business Park in Mickleham, Victoria. Powered by 8,500 square metres of rooftop solar panels, the site has doubled production capacity while reducing environmental impact.

D’Orsogna continues to create award-winning hams, bacon, gourmet continental sausages, salami and other premium smallgoods, all crafted from the same authentic family recipes that began nearly a century ago.

Through every generation, quality ingredients, family recipes and innovation have remained the cornerstones of the business. The second generation continues to honour these traditions while embracing sustainability and modern craftsmanship, ensuring D’Orsogna’s future remains as rich in flavour as its past.
